Dallas Cowboys: Dak Prescott, Defense Key Factors in Victory Over New York Giants

The Dallas Cowboys opened the 2017 season with a win over the New York Giants on Sunday night. There were many questions coming into this game against their NFC East rival. How would the defense play? How would Dallas go on without running back Ezekiel Elliot?

As the days went on leading up to the game, several things were changing the landscape of the game. Elliot’s suspension was upheld and he would be available to play. Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was eventually ruled out with an ankle injury.

Other speculation came from the Cowboys offense. Many said that teams had film on Elliot and quarterback Dak Prescott and they would be easier to stop. That wasn’t the case come game time.

Over New York Giants

Prescott played the same way he did last season in the 2017 opener. He threw for 268 yards and threw a touchdown to right end Jason Witten. He could’ve had another touchdown pass, but he overthrew Dez Bryant in the end zone in the first quarter. Elliot also impressed, rushing for 124 yards.

The defense surprised most watching the prime time game. They held the high-powered Giants offense to no first downs through the first quarter. Throughout the entire course of the game, they held New York 33.3 percent third down conversion, 35 rushing yards and just three points.

The win last night for Dallas proved something for the rest of the season. Prescott and Elliot have not lost a step, despite teams having film on the two stars.

It also says something about the defense. They were able to shut down the team that shut them down twice in 2016. If they can perform like that again throughout the season, they could find themselves on top of the NFC East for the second consecutive season.

They will play their next two games on the road. They will play at Sports Authority Field at Mile High against the Denver Broncos this Sunday before heading to Phoenix, AZ to play the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football Week 3.
